Is Rice Water the Secret to Extreme Hair Growth?
Rice isn’t the first item to come to mind when you think of hair growth, we know. Surprisingly, the trend is to put rice water in your hair and experience amazing hair growth and shine. Let’s look deeper!
Rice has amazing amino acids, anti-oxidants, and vitamins B and E. People say that due to these properties, rice water detangles your hair, leaves your hair silky and shiny, and strengthens your hair. Rice water is also claimed to stimulate new hair growth! These are all claims, though.
The trend seems to have started when news of the Yao women of China and their long floor-length hair went viral.

A 2010 paper reported findings that continued use of rice water in your hair contributes to increased hair elasticity, so we know these claims are not all that unsubstantiated. We recognize that more research needs to be done on the topic.
Here’s a recipe for the rice water hair treatment! The Yao add grapefruit peels to the rice water as well. Add essential oil to the concoction if you can too! We love eucalyptus oil. This rice, water, and grapefruit peel mixture needs to be left sitting for one week. According to the Yao, the mixture must be fermented like that in order to be effective. Fermenting the mixture causes the pH of the mixture to decrease so that it is healthier for your hair follicles.
- Wash 1 part rice 2 times and then add 2 parts water to the washed rice.
- cut some grapefruit peels into the rice water mixture.
- Store the mixture in a air tight mason jar and let sit for a week.
- Let the mixture sit on your roots for 20 minutes before rinsing out.
It’s that simple. The Yao claim to use this instead of shampoo, but we recommend using a very gentle shampoo in addition to this rice water treatment. The shampoo should be extremely delicate with the hair in order to just get rid of the oils in your hair and not damage anything!
