Beauty sleep is not a myth and sleep does lessen the severity of wrinkles in the face and neck, at least temporarily. The body cools in anticipation of bed time (about half a degree) and to do so, the circulatory system increases blood flow to the skin. This is why the cheeks often flush at night.

What does it mean to be “radiant”? It generally means the color of the skin moves closer to the color of blood. A radiator in a house or car movers hot liquid around to distribute heat, and so does the circulatory system move warm blood around and skin tone changes to affect body temperature. This is why some people appear more radiant just before bedtime or during sleep.
Early in the nighttime sleep cycle, people typically have a surge in growth hormone. This period of deep sleep contributes to what people call “beauty sleep” as secretion of growth hormone helps repair and rebuild body tissues like muscle and bone. Many of the body’s tissues also show increased cell production and slower breakdown of proteins during deep sleep. Since proteins are the building blocks needed for cell growth and for the repair of damage from factors like stress and ultraviolet rays, deep sleep is true “beauty sleep.”
Tip 1: Hydration
Sleep does lessen the severity of wrinkles in the neck and face, at least temporarily. Some smoothing is due to position – lying down diverts the force of gravity. But there’s more to beauty sleep than that – otherwise just lying down to rest in the middle of the day would have the same effect. During sleep, the whole body, including the face, perspires more. This moisture on the skin smooths out wrinkles. Some cosmetics make your face looks better by making the skin moister. Sleep is a natural moisturizer – perspiration during sleep is a natural skin treatment. Make sure to drink 8 cups of water during the day and moisturize before going to bed!
Tip 2: Use a moisturizing face mask before bed
Apply a pre-cooled face mask during your night routine to get more moisture on your face. You will feel incredibly relaxed before bed! A favorite is the Lush Cosmetics Beauty Sleep Face Mask! At Lookin’ Good Salon, we do have in-house face masks that we apply to your face during your session if you request one and it leaves your skin looking youthful and glowing!
Tip 3: Get better sleep in general
- Reduce blue light exposure in the evening by putting away your electronics at least an hour before sleeping.
- Don’t consume any caffeine at least 2 hours before sleeping.
- Reduce long daytime naps.
- Get as much sunlight as you can during the day.

Rice isn’t the first item to come to mind when you think of hair growth, we know. Surprisingly, the trend is to put rice water in your hair and experience amazing hair growth and shine. Let’s look deeper!
Rice has amazing amino acids, anti-oxidants, and vitamins B and E. People say that due to these properties, rice water detangles your hair, leaves your hair silky and shiny, and strengthens your hair. Rice water is also claimed to stimulate new hair growth! These are all claims, though.
The trend seems to have started when news of the Yao women of China and their long floor-length hair went viral.

A 2010 paper reported findings that continued use of rice water in your hair contributes to increased hair elasticity, so we know these claims are not all that unsubstantiated. We recognize that more research needs to be done on the topic.
Here’s a recipe for the rice water hair treatment! The Yao add grapefruit peels to the rice water as well. Add essential oil to the concoction if you can too! We love eucalyptus oil. This rice, water, and grapefruit peel mixture needs to be left sitting for one week. According to the Yao, the mixture must be fermented like that in order to be effective. Fermenting the mixture causes the pH of the mixture to decrease so that it is healthier for your hair follicles.
- Wash 1 part rice 2 times and then add 2 parts water to the washed rice.
- cut some grapefruit peels into the rice water mixture.
- Store the mixture in a air tight mason jar and let sit for a week.
- Let the mixture sit on your roots for 20 minutes before rinsing out.
It’s that simple. The Yao claim to use this instead of shampoo, but we recommend using a very gentle shampoo in addition to this rice water treatment. The shampoo should be extremely delicate with the hair in order to just get rid of the oils in your hair and not damage anything!

Firstly, you need to know some things about skin care when it comes to keeping your skin dewy in winter time.
- Don’t over-exfoliate. Let some of those natural oils keep your skin moisturized.
- Hydrate from the inside out! Drink water, 8 cups a day.
- Apply coconut oil to any dry patches of skin.
- Invest in a humidifier.
- Go to sleep with vaseline or petroleum jelly of your choice on your lips.
You should have different moisturizers for the summer time vs the winter time. In the winter time, it’s best to use a thicker lotion to combat the dry air. Make sure to also have sunscreen into your routine because the sun’s UV rays still hit your skin even on cold, cloudy days.
People say that a toner spray is their life saver in the winter time! Just spray your face several times during the day or whenever you need an extra boost of moisture on your face! Here’s a list of some great moisturizers for the winter time:
- Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream
- Neutrogena Hydro Boost
- Aquaphor Healing Ointment
- CeraVe Moisturizing Cream
- La Roche-Posay Lipikar Balm AP +
- Vichy Aqualia Thermal Rich Cream Face Moisturizer with Hyaluronic Acid.
- Vanicream Moisturizing Skin Cream.

At Lookin’ Good Salon, we value the health of our clients’ hair over appearance, always. The integrity of the hair should never be damaged in pursuit of beauty. To wit, heatless hair styles are important because you have achieve the same beautiful hair with less heat and therefore less damage to your precious follicles. Here are some heatless hair textures! We love to teach our clients all about them so that they can do it themselves at home!
Heatless Curls
There are several ways to achieve those bouncy bombshell curls without heat. The most popular way is overnight hair wraps.

This technique involves wrapping your hair around a soft rope. Take a soft bathrobe rope and microwave it to make it warm. Part your hair down the middle as if you are about to make pig-tails. Lay the rope on your head like so.

Next, take hair from the crown of your head at the top and wrap it around the rope. Go down your head and add more hair in with every twist. Do this until your hair is wrapped around the rope like this on both sides. Fasten the ends with scrunchies or hair-ties. You can cover your head in a sleeping cap overnight to reduce frizz.

When you take out the rope in the morning, reposition your hair and style it minimally to get beautiful heatless waves!
Heatless Straightening
Going from curly hair to straight hair overnight without heat is a little bit of a challenge, but not impossible to achieve. Use a smoothing product on your hair and comb your wet hair until its dry. Make sure to comb your hair all forwards so that when you flip your hair back, you’ll have volume left.
Some people elect to use jumbo rollers too. You can apply a serum and use jumbo rollers on your head and dry with cold air to get glass shiny hair.
Another option is to wrap your wet hair around your head and dry with cold hair or sleep on it. Start by drying your hair with cold air until almost dry, then grab sections and pin them around your head, wrapping them all around. Secure your hair with bobby pins with a cardboard like surface under them to prevent dents.

At Lookin’ Good Salon, it is a necessity that every client is educated on their type of curls and how to take care depending on type. Each curl pattern has a specific, best way to handle it so that the curls are bouncy and shiny.
Learn about them here! What’s your hair type?
Type 2 waves are bendable, can be fine to coarse, and have a definitive S pattern that lays closer to the head.

Those with hair type 2A have a fine, barely-there tousled texture that’s very easy to straighten. People with this texture have to be wary of using heavy styling products that can easily weigh their strands down, rendering them limp and lifeless.
2B hair lies flatter at the crown with defined S-shaped waves starting from the midlength. Strands are thicker in diameter than a 2A, and you’ll have to put a bit more elbow grease into getting it straight. To enhance your natural surfer-babe waves, use a sea-salt hair spray enriched with natural sea salt and aloe for sexy texture that’s never crunchy or stiff.
2C waves are thick and more susceptible to frizzing. The S-bends are well-defined and begin at the roots. Lorde is the perfect example of this hair type. In between shampoos, use a non-lathering, sulfate-free cowash so as not to strip essential moisture from strands. Also, consider using a leave-in conditioner and anti-frizz serums to combat course frizziness.
Type 3 curly hair can range from loose, buoyant loops to tight, springy corkscrews which have some sheen but are prone to frizz.

3A strands tend to be shiny with large, loose curls that are about the size of a piece of sidewalk chalk. Scrunch curl cream into your dry hair to help emphasize the curl texture. But keep your hands (or brush or comb, for that matter) from touching your curls afterward, or you run the risk of having a halo full of frizz.
Hair type 3Bs have springy ringlets with a circumference similar to a Sharpie marker. This hair texture can get dry, so look for styling gels that have humectants in them to attract moisture to strands.
3C curls are tight corkscrews that range in circumference from a straw to a pencil, like you see her on Yara Shahidi. Strands are densely packed together, giving way to lots of natural volume. Frizziness can be an issue with this type, so use a sulfate-free, creamy cleanser
Type 4, coily hair, commonly referred to as Afro-textured or kinky hair, is naturally very dry and spongy in texture and can be soft and fine or coarse and wiry. Strands form very tight, small curls of zig-zags right from the scalp and are prone to major shrinkage.

People with hair type 4A have dense springy, S-patterned coils that are the circumference of a crochet needle. If you’re a fan of wash-and-gos, styling should be done more frequently to keep this coily texture popping with soft, pliable strands. A curling cream with a leave-in moisturizer is a must for adding more moisture to daily wash-and-go styling.
4B strands are densely packed and can bend in sharp angles like the letter Z.styling creams, like the Crème of Nature Coconut Milk Curl Hydrating Curling Cream, for this hair type because they are thicker and are great for palm-rolling or shingling, two types of product distribution methods that stretch out coils and clump them for greater texture definition and elongation.
4C textures are similar to 4B textures, but the tightly coiled strands are more fragile and have a very tight zig-zag pattern that is sometimes indiscernible to the eye. This hair type experiences the greatest amount of shrinkage — about 75 percent or more — than the other textures.Since shrinkage and dryness are major concerns for these tightly-coiled folks, use a liberal amount of leave-in moisturizer, such as the SheaMoisture Red Palm Oil & Cocoa Butter Curl Stretch Pudding to max the length of those strands. Castor oil is also a great hydrator and sealant for this very dry texture. Try the SheaMoisture 100% Pure Jamaican Black Castor Oil.
