Uh oh. You look in the mirror one morning and those pesky split ends are staring you in the eye. The frizz is giving you a mean glance. The dull and brassy locks are ready to fight. And so are you.
Ding ding! Hair masks walk into the ringer! A sharp uppercut, the body slam! It’s a K.O. for damaged hair. Hair masks emerge victorious, once again.

Jokes aside, hair masks are really are the winners when it comes to damaged hair. Of course, you could just chop it all off and start fresh, growing your hair out once again and that’s a great option. But if you still want that length of yours but no damaged ends and dull hair, deep conditioning, strengthening hair masks are the solution.
The key components of fighting damaged hair are: deep conditioning and shine. Our all-time favorite hair mask is coconut oil. You have probably heard something about coconut oil at some point, for good reason. Coconut oil helps to clear the scalp of any unwanted particles clogging pores, it restores vitality and shine to hair follicles and soothes split ends. You can combine 2 tbsp of coconut oil with 2 tbsp of castor oil and heat in a microwave for around 20 seconds, just till it’s warm. Then apply to roots and massage into scalp and add more to the ends where hair damage is visible. Comb it through, remove the tangles. Leave this in your hair for at least 2 hours, best results after leaving it in overnight.
Another favorite is 4 tbsp melted coconut oil, a half mashed banana, an egg, and a couple squeezes of honey into your scalp for an hour or two before you wash your hair. This will leave your hair feeling thicker and less frizzy at the same time.

Balayage is a way to add highlights by directly painting on your hair, and it gives a natural, effortless look. While balayage is all about subtly brightening up hair, reverse balayage adds darkness and dimension back to light hair.
“Reverse balayage adds depth back at the root,” says Meena Shah, our master stylist. “It lowers the contrast between highlights and root color, and pops the rest of the highlights. It’s great for blondes who want to go a bit darker without a lot of commitment.” So instead of the typical subtle ombré where a stylist will lighten up your ends, they’re working backward by adding in the deeper tones to get the same effect.
Reverse balayage simulates natural hair growth progression, which is the reason it is so popular. There isn’t a soul who doesn’t want that easy-breezy “I woke up like this” look. It works and it’s gorgeous. Going back in the hair and adding low lights and darker tones to make the highlights pop is what balayage is all about.

What is a Perm? A perm is a chemical process that changes the chemical structure of your hair follicles and texture. This means that the hair follicles can go from straight to curly or vice versa. You can even perm your lashes to be curlier! There are several types of perms: Japanese straight perms, classic perm, digital perms…

In modern perms, the curls are made using one size of rod. This approach is outdated because, as we all know, everyone has different hair. Perms should be customizable depending on YOUR hair type and preference. A lot of women are also getting perms to help enhance their natural texture, giving their waves or curls more structure and life.
Be specific about the type of curl that you want and make sure that your stylist is using the perfectly sized rod for that. If you want beach waves, then your stylist should use rollers for thick, bouncy curls.
Given your hair length and density, give yourself at least 2 and 1/2 hours for the length of your appointment!
Perms in short hair can last 3 to 4 months, whereas perms in long hair can last 6 to 8 months. When your natural roots and texture start growing in this pushes the perm to the ends, this typically works great for long hair as women will then have waves throughout the mid-shaft and ends—a styled look. For short hair, texture may look uneven, weighing on how often you want to get a touch-up.
Make sure to use deep conditioning treatments and regular coconut oil masks to replace the moisture loss from the chemicals of the perming process. In addition, don’t use heat on your hair frequently as the hair follicles can be a little delicate after the intensity of the perming process.
If your hair is already delicate due to damage or if your hair is color treated already, consider passing on the perm for now. If you get a perm with fragile follicles, the curls may not hold well and your hair will look frizzy and damaged. If you frequently use your curling iron, do consider getting a perm! Forget about 2020 and embrace 2021! This is the year to be your best self and move forward. Here are some beauty trends to give you a boost this year.
Skinimalism

Skinimalism is all about natural and fresh makeup that glows, absolutely no dry make-up cakey-ness. This year, women everywhere are moving towards more natural skincare products that promote skin health and reducing wrinkles, rather than covering them up. Your skincare routine should include products with retinols, hyaluronic acids, glycolic acids, and vitamins. Skin masks are a must!
Upwards Eyebrows

Riding the natural makeup trend wave, thicker and more natural eyebrows are in style. Apply some eyebrow gel onto your brows and comb them upwards with a small mascara wand. Minimal tinting product required. So gorgeous.
Colorful Liner

Colorful eyeliners are the new beauty trend right now, you’ll see it all over Pinterest. A fresh pop of color to brighten your day may be the mood for 2021.
Maskne Products

Maskne is an umbrella term for all acne and skin irritation developed by wearing a mask often. In most cases, maskne is a result of clogged pores. You already have oil, bacteria, and dead skin cells on your skin. But when you wear a mask, these substances can build up more and block your pores. To prevent maskne, wash your face with a gentle cleanser in the morning and in the night and after you wear your mask. Use cortisone cream and moisturizers with ceramides. If maskne is severe enough, use a salicylic acid cleanser. Finally, invest in a silk mask because silk is very smooth and does not irritate the skin and its hydrophobic nature makes it an ideal substitute for a surgical mask.

Why hair extensions?

Picture from Haircation.
Have you ever wondered about why your hair just won’t grow past a certain length? And if it does grow longer, the ends look frail and thinned out. Plus, even after some tender love and care to your follicles — eating right, exercising, supplements — because of our genetics, hair can’t be made much denser than what you’re born with. In comes hair extensions!
The long hair you’ve been dreaming of can be achieved within a matter of minutes! Clip-in hair extensions will not hinder hair growth so it’s the best alternative to rocking longer locks while waiting for your real hair to grow out. Extensions are great for a color change as well since there are extensions with highlights already in them.
Layering extensions underneath hair in multiple places on your head will give you guaranteed volume. There are various types and weights of extensions depending on your existing hair density. All it takes is a little bit of research! One company that has been dominating the hair extension market is Luxy Hair. Although their extension products can be pricy, their quality is top-notch. At Lookin’ Good Salon, we can teach you how to use your hair extensions and care for them in the best ways! Give us a call or book an appointment!
