How to Maintain Your Colored Hair

You did it! You’ve finally gone to the salon and have your dream hair color or gorgeous highlights. Your hair looks exactly how you want it, so now how do you maintain it? Getting your hair colored was a process you invested a lot of time and money in, so of course, you want it to last as long as possible. Keep your hair looking great with these tips:

  1. Wash your hair less frequently. We know. This is a pretty common tip that we bring up a lot, but washing your hair too much will fade your color pretty quickly.
  2. Use a shampoo and conditioner suited for color-treated hair. Going along with washing your hair less frequently, you will need to incorporate a shampoo and conditioner that is geared toward making your new hair color last as long as possible. Use a dry shampoo if you need to freshen up your hair between washes.
  3. Keep heat to a minimum. Frequent use of heat tools like blowdryers and flat irons are a no-no if you want to keep your color. Heat will strip your color much faster. You will also want to wash your hair in cooler water or use a shower cap if you like bathing in hot water.

You’ve spent a lot of time getting your hair done and we want to help you make sure your color lasts. If you are unsure about what products to use on your color-treated hair or want to know how to care for your specific hair type, feel free to contact us at (678)816-1654 or on our social media!

The Benefits of a Keratin Treatment

If you’ve been getting your hair done long enough, you’ve probably heard of Keratin treatments. They’ve become extremely popular over the last couple of years due to the amazing effects they can produce.

Keratin is a structural protein found in your hair, skin, and nails and plays a huge role in protecting your hair from damage. The purpose of a Keratin treatment is to strengthen your hair and keep it healthy.

A major draw of Keratin treatments is that it eliminates frizz, leaving you with tame, glossy hair. Keratin treatments make styling your hair much easier if you usually have a hard time with it because of its textures. It’s hard to beat having shiny, manageable hair right?

A Keratin treatment is a chemical process, so if you’re apprehensive about adding chemicals to your hair, whether it has already been chemically processed before or not, feel free to ask us about the health of your hair! We will never purposely damage your hair, so ask any questions you may have for us about getting a Keratin treatment.

Once you get the treatment, it should last up to six months. Make sure to limit the amount of times you wash your hair per week and invest in Keratin-infused products for at-home upkeep. We look forward to seeing you soon!

How to Manage Oily Hair

We’ve talked about how to handle limp hair, but did you know a primary cause for limp hair is oiliness? Natural oils are essential for the health of your hair, but excess oil can lead to greasy hair.

Oily hair can have a few different causes. Hormonal changes, diet and season changes can all impact the amount of oil your scalp produces. One of the most common causes of oily hair, however, is doing too much to it whether it’s applying too much heat or shampooing too often.

Shampooing too often will strip the scalp of its oils, leading too overproduction to compensate. If you are experiencing oily hair, try first scaling back on washes. Use lukewarm or cool water when you wash your hair. Hot water will stimulate oil production.

Using a clarifying shampoo will clear out product buildup, leaving you with squeaky clean hair. The right shampoo and conditioner will do wonders for your hair. Stick with products that are more mild and add moisture.

There are many reasons your hair may be oily, but a good way to find the root cause is to start with changing your hair care routine. If you have any questions or concerns about your hair, Lookin’ Good Salon is here to help!

How to Handle Flat, Limp Hair

We all want to have shiny, voluminous hair, but sometimes we end up waking up with limp, lifeless hair. Limp hair is a very common issue, but luckily there are plenty of solutions!

  • Use the right shampoo and conditioner. Don’t use shampoos and conditioners that are formulated for people with thick/coarse hair. Use products that emphasize volume. Make sure you thoroughly rinse your hair because excess shampoo and conditioner can weigh your hair down. If you’re washing your hair every day, you may want to transition to washing it every other day.
  • Use a volumizer. When in doubt, invest in a great styling product that will do wonders for your hair. We suggest GK Hair’s Volumizeher Spray for beautiful waves and curls.
  • Use rollers. Achieving gorgeous, full hair can be as easy as putting a few rollers in. Leave them in for a bit and boom! Good volume and pretty curls.
  • Add layers. If you have fine hair that is also thick, adding layers can give it more body. If you’re unsure of whether layers will work for you, ask us! We’re more than happy to find the right cut for you.
  • Blowdry your hair upside down. After you wash your hair, flip your hair and begin blowdrying the underside. Follow this by brushing your hair in the same direction. This technique will make your hair appear fuller and thicker.

Limp hair can be a bummer, but you don’t have to live with it! There are plenty of easy techniques you can try out to get the bounce you want. Come in for a consultation and we’ll help you achieve full, beautiful hair.

Haircuts for Different Face Shapes!

Every face shape has a unique, flattering haircut. Here are some haircuts for every face shape!

If you have a round face, try going for a lob or a pixie cut. If you have a square face shape, try a posh bob with choppy bangs. If you have a heart face shape, try some long wavy hair or a pixie cut with side-swept bangs. If you have a diamond-shaped face, go for an A-line bob or a shoulder-length hair cut and make sure to show off your forehead!

If you have an oval face, chances are that most haircuts look amazing on you, but you can still change it up by going for long wavy layered hair or a shoulder-length bob with layers. If you have a long square face, counteract the length of your face with lots of curls or shorter hairstyles shorten your face shape like a mid-length layered cut with straight bangs.

Always consult with your stylist about face shape, hair texture, skin color, and lifestyle factors that influence which haircut is best!

When to Shampoo Your Hair

You should always strive to have clean, healthy hair, but unfortunately, there is such a thing as shampooing too often. If you aren’t careful you can end up stripping your hair of its much-needed natural oils (sebum), making it dry and dull. The amount of times you need to wash your hair per week really depends on the type of hair you have. We can give you a consultation if you’re curious about beginning a regimen specifically for your hair type, but let’s go over some basics.

While natural oils are great, if you tend to have hair that gets oily pretty quickly, you’ll need to wash it more frequently (at least 2-3 times a week). Oily hair is more common in those with thin, straight hair types because oil is able to coat the strands more easily than it does with thicker hair types. Those with curlier, coarser hair types can go longer without washing (once a week or less) because it is drier and takes more time for oils to coat the scalp.

Of course, hair type isn’t the only factor you should be mindful of. If you exercise or sweat a lot, you will need to wash your hair more frequently than someone who doesn’t. If your hair is damaged you should minimize the number of times you are washing your hair a week. If your hair is chemically processed with color or a perm, you can also scale back on washes.

The bottom line is that everyone’s hair is different. What works for one person may not work for you even if you two technically have the same hair type. Factors like lifestyle and weather play a huge role in caring for your hair. Be ready to adjust your shampoo schedule as your hair changes.

If you aren’t sure what your hair type is, we are happy to help and give personalized tips for how to keep your hair shiny and healthy. Happy washing!

Stubborn Gray Hairs

How long have you been putting up with those pesky gray hairs that seem to multiply every day? Getting gray hair is a normal part of the aging process, but if you aren’t ready to show those silver stripes, we’ve got you covered—literally!

You actually have a few options to choose from if you want to cover your gray hair: Demi-permanent color, permanent color, and highlights. Let’s start with demi-permanent color.

Demi-Permanent Color

Demi-permanent color doesn’t have ammonia in it and won’t actually change your hair color. This method allows your grays to blend in better with your natural hair color. This method is great if you only have a few stray gray hairs here and there and don’t want to commit to the long process of permanent color.

Permanent Color

Permanent color is exactly what it says on the tin. Using this method, the color will actually penetrate the hair follicle and cover the gray. Permanent color is suited to those who have large patches of gray throughout their hair and want to completely cover it.

Highlights

If you aren’t happy with how prominent your gray hair is but don’t want the commitment that comes with permanent color, highlights are definitely an option. Highlights blend your grays with your hair color very naturally and will require less upkeep than fully covering them up.

If you’re unsure of the best option to take with your hair, ask! When you come into the salon, we can assess your hair needs and move forward from there. If you aren’t ready to make an appointment but still have some quick questions about your hair, you can call us at (678)816-1654.

Whether you want to completely get rid of your grays or just make them less noticeable, we here at Lookin’ Good Salon are happy to help. Come chat with us on our social media!
